SIR - How sad it was last week to see a quote in the Worcester News by Councillor Adrian Gregson, the leader of the Labour Group on the city council, "hoping that the strike by members of Unison would highly disrupt our daily life." Worst still, it is intended to be the first of many such actions.

The reason for the strike, of course, was to demonstrate against the Government's threat to proposed changes to their pension fund.

Now, for most of us, the strike, if it caused any problems at all, was just a minor irritant - a nuisance. However, those most affected, as reported in your paper, were mothers with young families at school who had to lose time off work to look after their children.

The children lost a day's education, the elderly didn't have their bins emptied, and people with physical and learning difficulties would not have had the use of their day centres. Then there would be the knock-on effect on their families, too. Surely those innocent people are not the ones Adrian should be punishing over the threat to his members' pensions? Shouldn't he have been taking action against those who are causing the problem? The banners outside the Guildhall were naming John Prescott as the culprit. Well, forgive cynical old me, but I am quite sure that the Deputy Prime Minister will not have been persuaded in the slightest by the day's actions.

If John Prescott is to blame, Adrian Gregson should take action against him and his colleagues where it most hurts. I would say this to Councillor Gregson - you voted this bunch in Adrian, how about voting them out next time?

After all, taxation is now getting to a crippling level with more promised, the National Health Service is in crisis, it is now virtually impossible to get dental treatment on the NHS, immigration is a huge embarrassment, crime is not much better - surely enough is enough?

While Coun Gregson is feeling so touchy on the pension problem, perhaps he should ponder on two points. What about all those thousands who have actually lost all their occupational pensions - and am I right in thinking that the Labour Government has had nine years in power yet has done nothing to guard against this growing problem?

COUN DAVID CLARK,

Worcester City Council.
