SIR - I have the impression that L Spiteri thought I was being intolerant in suggesting that the taxi drivers should be more discerning about who they let into their cabs. But as regards his question about citizen's arrest and the issue of banning customers he raises two interesting issues about the freedoms of individuals to detain or prevent offences. Yes, you can still use a citizen's arrest on a person.

The offence must be within a certain category, and in commission or having been committed. The person arrested must then be handed over to the police or taken to a local police station. If the citizen gets it wrong there can be legal consequences, and so in all but the most obvious circumstances it is best to leave it to the police who not only are trained but also well equipped to restrain people lawfully and safely.
