SIR - I was surprised by the recent Rough Guide description of Worcester. If the researcher had stepped out of the city shopping centre, towards other areas of historic interest such as the Commandery, then things could have been very different.

Fort Royal Park is in the heart of an existing community as well as a number of new exciting developments and provides the heart of the community, generating a sense of pride. It overlooks the city providing fantastic views to the surrounding county, and compliments the Commandery. However, the sad reality is that it is a squalid disgrace. It sadly only manages to undermine the sense of community.

I was surprised when work started recently. The working baby swing and turntable were ripped out and a carpet of tarmac laid in their place. I feel offended by this token effort. I hope that whoever is responsible for planning can take up the gauntlet and be inspired to create something we can all be proud of for generations to come.

ANTHONY NESS,

Worcester.
