SIR – Before naming his World Cup players Fabio Capello said he would not consider any player who was not completely fit or who did not play for his club on a regular basis. Six of the players who he did select and take to South Africa came under that radar, no need to name them, that is common knowledge. In football, as in any other walk of life, you are judged on results, so if Capello had any pride, he would have held his hands up and resigned without any pay off. I won’t hold my breath waiting.

The only way these overpaid, overrated players can get any respect at all from the British public they so badly let down is to donate any money they get paid to charity, and that includes the manager as well. Will someone confront them and make that suggestion? I doubt it.
