SIR - I notice D E Margrett has taken me to task about the St George's flag. Of course, I know that it is the flag for England, but the union flag seems to be forgotten now that Scotland and Wales have their own assemblies and unlike the USA and Canada, we need planning permission to fly our Union flag.

After my letter in support of George Atkins, the next day he had the decency to phone me and thank me for my support. The consequence was that we had a long chat about the war and recalled that more than 1,000 ships' personnel companies had beaten the u-boats. Where was D E Margrett at the time?
