SIR – What a shame that Andy and Julia Potter didn’t help out at a local animal shelter instead of a zoo for a day (Worcester News, August 27). Zoos and safari parks portray themselves as centres of conservation for endangered species and for the education of the public, but they are little more than tourist attractions holding animals captive for our entertainment. The sad truth is that in many cases, zoos and safari parks breed animals simply to attract visitors and publicity.

Pressure on resources means some will be killed, sold to private keepers on to other zoos. Some UK zoos even have pet shop licences. If you care about animals don’t visit zoos and safari parks. Protection of wild animals’ natural habitat is the only real way of saving endangered species.
