SIR – Although our economic crisis developed during the regime of New Labour, I think we should be concerned that the then opposition parties (present coalition government) must have been asleep on duty.

Westminster does not seem to be a place of secrets so the opposition parties must have been aware of the deficit and impending crisis.

However, as I recall, the Conservatives did not object to a massive financial rescue operation to their friends in banks and other city institutions, and the Lib Dems never stopped asking for increases in public spending, even during the election campaign.

All must therefore bear some responsibility for our current difficulties.
