SIR – I am writing to thank your readers for their patience and understanding following a fatal traffic collision on the M5 motorway on Friday, May 13.

As a result of the incident, involving a car and an HGV, two women lost their lives and the motorway was closed for several hours in both directions.

This obviously caused major delays and inconvenience for some drivers.

However I need to stress the importance of a thorough investigation at the scene to establish the cause of the collision.

I'm sure every reader would want us to do this if any of their loved ones were tragically killed on the motorways.

All steps are taken to minimise the duration of road closures, but this has to be balanced with securing key evidence at the scene, which is lost once the carriageway is opened.

Thankfully these type of incidents are rare in our region and most drivers get to their destination without experiencing any injury or incident.
