SIR – It’ s shocking to see that rail fares are going to rise by at least 30 per cent over the next four years to apparently fund railway improvements.

But what of the services provided by the train firms?

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that after paying for a ticket, I’ve had to stand for the whole journey as there have not been any spare seats. I’ve witnessed families and the old with heavy luggage doing the same. How can this be safe?

If you pay the price then at least you should expect a seat – or some refund. While I’ve complained to the train firms, I’ve yet to recieve an answer.

And to think you are encouraged to use public transport to take cars off the road.
