SIR - The UK has sold out to trivia and so John Phillpott is completely right to emphasise the oppressiveness of many rules that have flourished since 1997. The big mistake that we make as a nation is in thinking that we can regulate our way to a happy and healthy society. Parliament is awash with combative dialogue about clamping down on this and clamping down on that.
Government likes to pander to the prejudices and anxieties of the electorate if it is politically expedient. So many rules stifle creativity and initiative and criminalise trivia. It is a little depressing to witness the evolving tragedy whereby the nation is intoxicated on soaps and sports coverage while fundamental freedoms are going down the plughole.
