SIR – I would like to add my congratulations to the Worcester News for your very successful campaign promoting the recruitment of apprentices.

I enjoyed reading the special supplement that you printed (September 14) showing the wide range of employers, skills and trainees involved.

This is a great contribution to helping our local economy and local communities and giving young people (and older ones) a start on the career ladder.

I had thought there was a notable absence in the roll of honour of enlightened employers, in the shape of Worcester City Council.

However, having read the Worcester News on September 23, I spotted a small article on page 11, telling us that the cabinet has finally decided to climb aboard your initiative.

They have squeezed £30,000 out of their budgets to encourage other employers to take on up to 30 apprenticeships and interns.

How will this £1,000 bounty per head be distributed?

What will the criteria be?

Will it be a reward for businesses which support the current Conservative administration?

Yet again our city council is giving too little, too late.

Why didn’t they think to take on any apprenticeships themselves?

Maybe because they are too busy counting the pennies to care about human costs.

The smiles of the successful apprentices, supported by their proud bosses, are invaluable.

It is a good job that the Worcester News is working for the benefit of ordinary people because there is not much evidence that our present council is.
