Sir – Yet again the Tory-controlled county council is trying to reduce congestion on the much-maligned southern link road (Worcester News, September 16).

They intend to spend £19 million to tinker around with the traffic islands at Powick and Whittington.

I have no doubt that this will help a little, but frankly unless and until the county council gets to grip with the real problem, namely the growing need and the obvious requirement to complete the ring-road around the city, with a second river crossing to the north, they will simply be playing with the problem.

Having a ring-road which only covers three-quarters of the city is the real problem.

Growing demand for housing is coming to the west bank of Worcester and we know affordable housing is desperately needed.

However, without the infrastructure needed, the new housing will simply bring added traffic chaos and gridlock.

No new employer will be tempted to develop west of the river unless and until the problem can be tackled. People living in these new homes will have to drive to their jobs, especially after the county council axed many local bus routes.

Labour county councillors continue to argue for the completion of the ring-road.

Without the ring-road, economic growth and sustainable development cannot come to St John’s.
