Christmas is approaching and many families will undoubtedly be excited to enjoy the festive period once Term 2 is finished.

Students, teachers and family members alike will all be eying up that end of term with it coming up very soon so that the celebrations can truly begin.

Here's when schools will be finishing up for the Christmas break in England for 2023.

When do schools in England break up for Christmas in 2023?

The exact date your local school will break up might differ slightly from institution to institution and council to council.

However, it will be during the week beginning Monday, December 18 with schools likely to officially end their term on Thursday, December 21 or Friday, December 22.

After a couple of weeks off, many schools should start off Term 3 on Monday, January 8 in 2024.

England school holiday and term dates 2024

Whilst some term and holiday dates may differ by local authority, most will follow a certain pattern.

Most English schools will have Term 3 finish up on Friday, February 9 with the half-term lasting from Monday, February 12 to Friday, February 16.

Term 4 will then start on Monday, February 19 and will have its last day on Thursday, March 28.

After that, there will be the Easter break lasting from Friday, March 29 to Friday, April 12.



Term 5 will start on Monday, April 15 and conclude on Friday, May 24, with its half-term lasting from Monday, May 27 to Friday, May 31.

Term 6 will start on Monday, May 3 and then pupils will break up for the summer holidays around Friday, July 26.

England bank holidays for 2024

The bank holidays will fall on January 1 (New Year's Day), March 29 (Good Friday), April 1 (Easter Monday), May 6 and May 27 for the first part of the year.

After that there will be bank holidays for August 26, December 25 (Christmas Day) and December 26 (Boxing Day).
