Poundland has provided a progress update on its 'recovery plan', revealing it has closed more than 150 stores over recent months.
Poundland announced plans to shut 68 shops and two warehouses in the UK following its takeover by investment firm Gordon Brothers back in June 2025, affecting around 1,300 jobs.
These restructuring plans were approved by the high court in August, and store closure began shortly after.
The retailer concluded its main store closure programme in September, shutting 57 stores and placing 11 closures on hold.
More closures have taken place since then due to leases expiring or landlords serving notice.
Poundland provides update amid ongoing closures
At the beginning of the restructuring process, there were more than 800 Poundland stores located across the UK.
This number dropped to 651 at the end of 2025, the retailer revealed in its latest update.
It has now reduced even further, with 11 more shops closing so far in January:

- Ponders End (January 5)
- Kilmarnock (January 5)
- Faversham (January 6)
- Mitcham (January 14)
- Liverpool (January 15)
- Yeovil (January 16)
- Cameron Toll (January 20)
- Nottingham Eastpoint (January 22)
- Dorchester (January 18)
- Plymstock (January 20)
Poundland also closed its centres in Darton and Springvale, Bilston in an effort to "consolidate its distribution network".
The same consolidation plan resulted in 2,200 job cuts at the Walsall customer service centre on December 28, 2025, reducing the site's overall headcount from 14,200 to 12,000.
On top of all that, Poundland has also retired its digital app, removed frozen food from all stores, and increased the number of items on sale for £1 in shops to 60%.
Poundland managing director Barry Williams said: "While there’s been significant progress as we re-focus and re-energise the business with lower prices and a sharper offer, we know we still have much to do.
"Our focus on our costs has, without doubt, given us a platform for future growth, but no sustainable turnaround can be based on cost management alone.
"That’s why our focus in 2026 will be on delivering the kind of ranges and price simplicity our customers want right across the store - in clothing, homewares as well as our core grocery aisles.
"They’ve told us loud and clear they want a simpler, more focused Poundland that keeps its promise of amazing value.
"We have clear indications from the work we’ve already done, that we’re on the right track.

A further 12 Poundland stores are scheduled to close over the coming weeks:

- Coatbridge (February 8)
- Feltham (February 8)

- Nottingham (Chilwell) (February 13)
- Urmston (February 16)
Following these closures, Poundland will have shut a total of 172 stores in seven months (since August 2025).
"Extensive" clearance sales are underway at the Poundland stores scheduled to close.
The clearance sales will offer reductions of up to 40%, with items marked down in price until they’re sold.
The closing sales cover all stock in each store, from homewares and groceries to clothing and health & beauty.
Poundland’s UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, said: "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we’re determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers.
"The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we’re leaving with pride.
"And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we’ll continue to operate right across the UK."
Jollyes to open 5 new stores at former Poundland sites
Meanwhile, award-winning pet superstore, Jollyes, is in the process of opening new stores at former Poundland sites across the UK.
Jollyes already has more than 100 stores scattered across the UK, having almost doubled its numbers over the past three years.
Now, the pet retailer is set to open five new stores at former Poundland sites across the UK.
It has already opened four of these stores:
- Thurrock Shopping Park, Thurrock (November 28)
- Swinden Retail Park, Colne (November 29)
- St Nicholas Gate Retail Park, Carlisle (December 6)
- Princess Way Retail Park, Burnley (December 13)

The fifth new store will open at Cherry Tree Retail Park in Blackpool on January 24, 2026.
