The A38 is also closed tonight for resurfacing which is also causing a build up of traffic.
It will reopen at 6am tomorrow (Thursday).
Highways England has warned that two lanes of the M5 between junctions 5 and 4a are going to remain closed for some time.
"We're awaiting suitable machinery to get this load cleared. Delays are reducing."
