TWO voluntary organisations in Pershore are vying for a cash boost thanks to national home builder Taylor Wimpey.

Pershore Volunteer centre and Pershore Foodbank have been nominated by the company’s marketing division to be in with a chance of reaping £1,000 to help them run their community services.

Just one of the organisations will win the cash and it will be down to votes from local residents, who are being asked to email their choice to worcestershirebuiltfor@taylorwimpey-pr.co.uk or pop along to the firm’s office at the new Mirabelle Garden's development off Wyre Road, Pershore. The deadline for voting is Monday February 19.

The volunteer centre was set up in 1985 and supports local people experiencing rural or social isolation. It also provides volunteering opportunities for individuals who want to support the community and improve people’s quality of life.

It runs a community transport service where volunteer drivers take clients to appointments in their own cars and a minibus adapted for wheelchairs takes people, who cannot use public transport, on shopping trips and to social events. The service provides around 7,000 journeys a year.

It also holds a twice-monthly lunch club at St Andrew’s Community Centre and the organisation’s Resource Centre provides office facilities, meeting rooms and stationery for individuals and non-profit-making organisations at affordable rates.

The Pershore Foodbank opened in 2014 and provides three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis. It provided 484 packages of food to local people last year.

It is part of a national network to combat poverty and hunger in the UK and food is donated by businesses, individuals, churches and schools. The food is sorted and checked by volunteers to make sure it is in date and then packaged into boxes ready for people in need to collect.

People are referred by local agencies like Citizens Advice, housing departments, children’s centres, social services, local charities and professionals like doctors and health visitors, and are given a voucher they can exchange for a three-day food supply.
