MEMBERS of Mercian Nordic Walking group recently took part in a campaign to commemorate people who died in World War I.

It is estimated around 10 million people lost their lives between 1914 and 1918

48 members of the walking group took on the challenge, to walk 10 million steps in the month of November, and each bought a poppy for £10 with the total figure raised £500.

Mercian Nordic Walking owner, Ian Northcott, admitted the challenge was hard.

“We finished two days earlier than planned but we’re carrying on till the end of the month,” said Ian.

“The sheer number of steps was hard. The bad weather we encountered made it even harder.”

Before the walk began, members were asked if they were interested in tackling the task.

Ian said: “I asked my members if they collectively would like to try to walk 10 million steps in the month of November to remember those who lost their lives in the first world war.

“As many of my clients have walked the battlefields of France with me, they jumped at the chance.”
