Malvern Theatres hosted a multi-sensory theatre production for young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

The piece, Isle of Brimsker, had interactive sensory elements to explore in each part of the show, including water, scented air, glowing radios, vibrating ropes, ice and wind.

The sensory elements reiterated the story and could also be enjoyed in their own right, enhancing the theatrical experience.

A group from Worcester-based Acorns Children's Hospice attended the production, the first ever theatre trip for some of them.

Gilda Davis, Head Nurse at Acorns, said: “This was such a wonderful trip and we’re so grateful for Malvern Theatres for giving some of the young people such a memorable experience.

“Many of the children we care for have complex conditions and needs, which makes it challenging for their families to visit places like the theatre. So to be able to actively participate in this shared cultural experience is rare; it’s exciting and empowering for the children and they had a fantastic day.”

Bridget Lloyd, the theatre's director of engagement and creative learning, said: “Malvern Theatres is for everyone in our community, no matter what age or ability. The actors in this show were trained to give each individual the time they need to explore the sensory element, making the production unique and stimulating to all.

“We want everyone to be able to experience the thrill of live entertainment and visceral shows like this bring theatre to life - it was an incredibly moving day.”

Malvern Theatres has a wide ranging Take Part programme, including regular access performances, such as weekly subtitled cinema and monthly relaxed screenings, and weekly classes, such as dance classes for the over 55s and art classes for people with learning disabilities.

It also holds regular one-off workshops and specialist theatre. For more information, visit malvern-theatres.co.uk or call Bridget on 01684 580956.
