FREE exercise instructor training is on offer for people willing to volunteer at the popular Park Active sessions in parks across the borough.

The Park Active classes take place at five parks across the borough every weekend at Stevens Park in Wollescote, Buffery Park in Kates Hill, Abbey Street in Gornal, Stevens Park in Quarry Bank and Grange Park in Dudley.

The free sessions have proved a hit, and now organisers are hoping that local people will volunteer to assist with or lead the classes.

Organisers say volunteers do not need to be athletes, instead they need to be enthusiastic, friendly, committed and enjoy exercising outside.

Leaders will deliver community workouts as part of a team of volunteers and undertake two days of exercise and emergency first aid training. Supporters will assist the leader, advising on correct technique and motivating and encouraging participants.

Volunteers will receive access to free training opportunities including first aid, safeguarding and fitness qualifications, as well as a free badged kit for those leading sessions.

Deb Harkins, chief officer for health and wellbeing at Dudley Council, said: "The Park Active sessions are really popular, they’re open to everyone and have a lovely, supportive community feel. We’ve already seen how successful the community-led Park Run is, and we’re looking to develop Park Active in the same way. Dudley has fantastic local parks that are very much part of the local community and are great spaces to be active in.

"Our volunteer leaders will receive a range of training which will set them in good stead for this role and for their own personal and career development. These are great opportunities to pick up a new skill but also to help make communities healthier and bring local people together.”

People who wish to volunteer should attend two training dates, which take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June and Friday 21 and Sunday 23 June.
