CLENT Hills Vets is holding an event to teach essential pet first aid skills.

In many pet health emergencies it can be vital to get to a veterinary clinic as quickly as possible for treatment.

This event, now fully booked, will help pet owners recognise the symptoms of potential emergencies with advice regarding what can you do in the first instance before professional veterinary attention is available.

Emily Ashdown, a registered veterinary nurse, pet physiotherapist and first aid trainer, will deliver a series of demonstrations covering common emergency situations such cuts, choking, poisons, seizures, heat stroke, stings, and road traffic accidents.

She will also demonstrate how to perform CPR and advise people what they should have in their pet first aid kit.

Following the demonstrations there will be an opportunity to ask Emily specific questions.

Other nurses and staff will be on hand to answer questions throughout the evening.

The Pet First Aid Event is aimed predominantly at dog and cat owners.

Some of the techniques could be used on small furries – although the outcome for these smaller pets is less likely to have the same positive outcomes due to their size and the extra care needed in treating them.

Pet first aid kits will be available to buy at the event with profits going to Clent Hills Vets’ nominated charities for 2019 – Medical Alert Assistance Dogs and Therapy Dogs Nationwide.

Nurse Tash Wright said: “Knowing how to potentially save a pet’s life in an emergency demonstrates responsible pet ownership. Vets are the experts but being able to administer first aid yourself could save your pet’s life.

The free event on Tuesday, June 4 takes place at St John’s C of E Middle School Academy in Bromsgrove.

This event is for pet owners only – animals cannot be accommodated at the venue.
