A SEARCH was launched using dogs and the police helicopter after an injured driver fled from the scene of a crash.

The crash happened overnight between Saturday and Sunday on the B4211 between the Rhydd junction and the junction with the B4209.

A statement issued by the police said: "Late on Saturday night, just before midnight, officers discovered a badly-damaged vehicle on the Worcester Road at Hanley Castle.

"However, there were no occupants in or around the vehicle, and due to the extent of the vehicle's damage, and a concern for the welfare of whomever was in the car, a search was conducted which involved both the force helicopter and a dog team.

"No injured people were found, during the search; however, later on Sunday morning, a man was found walking along the road, not far from the scene, covered in blood, and was confirmed as the driver of the car.

"He was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the legal limit, but was later released with no further action.

"Due to the extent of his injuries, he was taken to hospital for treatment.
