THE COMMUNITY worked around the clock to make sure Herefordshire school could reopen after being devastated by Storm Dennis.

Whitchurch CE Primary School was hit by flooding twice during February half term, but did not impact on the vast majority of the buildings.

Headteacher Beth Stevens said the boiler house and staff room were flooded, but the classrooms and school hall were not affected.

"The display of togetherness as teams worked simultaneously to evacuate our neighbours from Whitchurch House was humbling," she said.

"Huge thanks go to members of our school community who came together and worked tirelessly throughout the holiday to protect our school from the elements.

"The emergency services were on hand throughout, making sure our site and staff were safe.

"We are also grateful to Josephs, our contractors, for their immense efforts during the last few days."

The school reopened as scheduled after half term on February 25, after hard work from the contractors and staff members.

She also thanked the local community for their "continued support and kind offers of help" during what she said was a difficult time for the school.
