A FARMER has shown his support to the NHS by creating a huge tribute to staff in a field near Hay-on-Wye.

Joseph Hughes, who has family members who have worked for the health service, said it was his way of showing support to the workers on the frontline during the coronavirus outbreak.

Other farmers in the United Kingdom have also shows their thanks so Mr Hughes created his own ploughed version of the NHS logo on the Welsh border at Glasbury.

"They're doing a lot for us at the minute so you've got to show your support to the NHS really," said Mr Hughes.

"My mother was a nurse and they're the ones that never get the pay rise, they're the ones that are forgotten about really.

"But it's in crises like this they come into their own and everybody has to appreciate them.

"They're the backbone of Britain is crises like this. I know we pay our taxes but it's a free of charge service really."

Sara Day was one of the first people to see the tribute on Wednesday when she was walking her dog on the common.

"It's very sweet, it's lovely, particularly as the positioning of it means they only people who are going to see it are those on the common who are walking their dogs," said Mrs Day, who lives in Glasbury.

"It's not really going to be seen by anybody except the small number of people who walk on the common, it's just a nice gesture.

"It certainly made me smile last night when I first saw it."

She added it's nice for the staff to know they are appreciated by the wider community.

It comes as the country is set to come together at 8pm this evening for the second Clap For Our Carers initiative.
