THE multi-million pound revamp of Malvern's swimming baths will go ahead sooner than expected due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The work to revitalise the Malvern Splash, due to cost £2 million, is now expected to start at the end of august, earlier than the original October start date.

The project should be completed in December, two months earlier than scheduled, and will involve full refurbishment of the swimming pool changing rooms, including dedicated changing facilities for people with disabilities and additional family changing areas.

There will also be a new interactive water play feature for younger swimmers, underwater lighting and PA system, a new flume and a new wave machine to enhance the experience for swimmers.

The poolside area itself will also be revamped. A new UV filtration system has already been installed that will improve water quality and lower levels of chlorine.

An enhanced cleaning regime will also be in place, hand sanitiser will be available throughout the centres and drinking fountains will be unavailable.

District Council leader Cllr Sarah Rouse said: "I’m delighted to confirm our commitment to delivering this £2million scheme which will deliver first class facilities for residents.

"We know some people may be disappointed they have to wait a while longer to enjoy a swim, but the revised timetable will minimise disruption meaning people will be able to enjoy the benefits of this significant investment much earlier than planned."

The news comes after Malvern Hills District Council announced its plan to help bring the district out of the coronavirus crisis with its economic recovery plan.

The plan involves actions such as supporting rough sleepers to get off the streets for good, continuing to provide support to businesses and regenerating town centres.

As well as this, the council intends to carry on with its Five Year Plan which includes the refurbishment of the Malvern Splash.

A spokesman said: "We will support our tourism industry and work with Malvern Theatres to help with their plans for reopening.

"We remain committed to delivering the actions in our Destination Zero plan which sets out our contribution towards cutting carbon emissions and the green economy."
