FIREFIGHTERS tackled a late-night blaze at a city fish and chip restaurant.
The fire broke out at Mediterranean Fish Bar in Broad Street just after 11.45pm last night (Monday).
The fire, in the ground floor kitchen, was caused by peas which had been left on and forgotten about, the owners say.
Jack Yiacoumi, part of the family which owns the business, said: "We were called by a friend walking and we were very scared the smoke alarm went off when some peas had been left on and burnt.
"We came down together but when we got there the fire crews had left.
"No damage has been done."
Phil Berry, station commander on scene said: “The premises had working smoke alarms which quickly raised the alarm and enabled the occupier to evacuate quickly and firefighters to extinguish the fire rapidly.”
He continued: “We urge all people to fit a working smoke alarm on every level of their home and ensure they are tested on a weekly basis.”
A spokesman from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service said: "We received a call to smoke in the building.
"There was a small fire in a ground floor kitchen.
"We had three appliances there as a precaution.
"No one was in the building.
"A man was given a precautionary check by paramedics."
Our pictures show the three fire engines and an ambulance in Broad Street, Worcester, where passersby described a 'a strong smell of smoke.'
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were quickly deployed and extinguished the fire with a hose reel jet with minimal damage to the chip shop.
One positive pressure ventilation fan was used to help remove the heated air and smoke and replace it with fresher air to the property.
Around 10 to 15 firefighters were there and they left the scene at around 12.45am this morning. (Tuesday)
