A DISABLED man claims he was verbally abused by a bus driver which has made him 'very angry.'

Paul Leighfield said he went to catch a bus and was called "a stupid spastic" by the driver when he accidentally presented him the wrong bus pass.

Mr Leighfield, 43 said "after this happened I got off the bus and got onto a different one. I was peed off. I nearly turned around and smacked him, but I just walked away. If I had my phone I would have recorded him.

However the bus company denies the allegation.

Mr Leighfield added: "It's disgusting."

"Me being on crutches wasn't really helping. I think the problem he had was that I was on crutches. People have told me in the past that this driver doesn't like anyone."

Mr Leighfield from Evesham has had to use crutches for eight years after he damaged his knee falling down the stairs of a bus. He has had physio therapy but still relies on public transport to get around.

The bus was a Diamond bus from Evesham, which Mr Leighfield caught on June 6. He had walked to the bus stop from Evesham College where he was studying IT and therapeutic gardening, and was intending to alight the bus near Morrisons to do his weekly shop.

Mr Leighfield reported the incident to the police. He has been contacted by victim support.

Diamond Buses denies that Mr Leighfield was insulted on thier bus. A spokesman said they are aware of the incident and have liaised with the police as it was reported to them. The police interviewed the driver concerned and decided that no further action would be taken.

Diamond Buses say it was established that Mr Leighfield was trying to use a pass not valid for the journey they were trying to complete, not for the first time. This was being pointed out at the time and at no point was the he spoken to in the way it has been reported, and that he did not leave the bus or was asked to leave the bus, continuing the journey.
