THE BROTHER of a woman who was killed in a car accident last year is cycling hundreds of miles to raise money in her name.

In December 2018 Becky Ward, 22, from Stoulton, and her friend Philippa Bertram, 20, from Darlington, were killed in a car accident on the Woodhead Pass as they were travelling to Manchester.

The pair were university students at Nottingham Trent University, studying Fashion Marketing and Branding and in their final year.

Becky's brother, Steven, is riding his bike in memory of the friends and, having set off on October 5, Becky's birthday, he will be cycling from London to the Edinburgh while making several stops in cities which had family connections along the way.

When she died, tributes flooded in for the former Pershore High School student, who was described as a "beautiful, caring girl."

Becky's family said: “Becky was a beautiful girl both inside and out who enjoyed life to the full. She was in her final year at Nottingham Trent University.

“Becky will be greatly missed by her family, boyfriend and many friends.”

The Supporting Opportunities Fund was set up following Philippa and Becky's deaths and aims to give educational opportunities to students at Nottingham Trent University, Department of Fashion, Marketing and Communication.

Having raised £12,000 so far, it is also hoped the fund will raise awareness of mental health issues, and is kicking off with a ‘wellness’ event at the university.
