Ashton under Hill’s main road was lined with hundreds of spectators again on New Year’s Day for the return of the village’s soapbox races.
38 teams took part in the event which raised funds for Ashton under Hill First School’s PFA and the village’s Social Centre.
There was a range of kart designs and special effects. There was an under 16s category and also an adults race in addition to best-built and best fancy dress awards. As a new feature this year, the top four karts in the adult category raced off head-to-head against each other in semi-finals and the winners met in a final.
Matt Cyphus, one of the organisers, said: “The teams never fail to amaze us with their kart designs. Some entries focussed on fancy dress, others purely on speed and some on both. We’d like to thank all our competitors for the effort they went to in order to entertain the crowd.”
The winners were ‘Dream Chaser’ (Gardens by Jenny Best Built Kart), ‘Rubba-dub-tub’ (bridge][ability Fancy Dress), ‘Dream Chaser’ (Simply Sedum Under 16s Cup) and ‘The Four Kartpersons of the Soapocalypse’ (Greentree Adults Cup
