MATT Gardiner believes the prospect of facing promotion-chasing Guiseley at St George’s Lane tomorrow (3pm) will bring the best out of Worcester City.

City bid to put back-to-back defeats behind them and stay in the running for a Blue Square Bet North play-off spot.

In Guiseley, they face arguably their toughest test yet on home soil and have not won at the Lane since December 15.

But the City assistant manager, holding the fort after Carl Heeley became a father for the second time last weekend, feels the Yorkshiremen’s style will suit Worcester.

Given that second-placed Guiseley have also not won for three games, City are ready to meet them head-on.

Gardiner said: “I think it will be a great game. Guiseley coming to us will actually make it better because, in the last few games, teams have come and sat in. The emphasis has been on us to attack and we’ve been picked off on the counter.

“Guiseley are a great footballing team and they will come at us so it actually suits us. We are looking forward to the game.

“It’s about time we got that one (home win) off our backs and put it to bed but we are under no illusions they are a good side.

“Guiseley are coming off the back of a bad run and will be looking to put that right. But we are not overawed by them and will give it our best shot.

“The players want a performance so we will do everything we can to get the right result.”

Gardiner continued: “The players want to put it right and they are determined but we need to keep our concentration levels.

“We have got good players but are having these mad moments that are giving us mini-mountains to climb.”

The sides met in a thrilling contest at Nethermoor Park last November when Mike Symons scored twice and Greg Mills once as City hit back from a three-goal deficit to draw 3-3 with Guiseley down to nine men.

Both could come back into the starting XI tomorrow as City seek a change of fortune, while right-back Tyler Weir is another poised to return after missing last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Harrogate.

Striker Michael Taylor has trained, despite struggling with an ankle injury, but midfielder Charlie Reece has suffered a virus in recent days.

Fellow forward Kyle Patterson’s three-month loan from Nuneaton was due to finish at the end of the month but he has made an early return to Liberty Way.
