A LEAGUE for under 12s is being organised by the Worcestershire Football Association for the 2013-14 season.

The competition has been introduced to cut down on the amount of travelling teams do in the Midland Junior Premier League, while also trying to maintain a high standard of opposition.

There are currently 11 teams signed up with Droitwich Spa, Eckington, Kidderminster Lions, Kidderminster Lions Cubs, Meadow Park, Newtown Sports, Nunnery Wood Colts, Warndon Villages, West Hagley, Westbury Celtic and Worcester Colts all confirmed for the September start.

There will also be a trophy competition.

Ollie Williams, football development officer, said: “We have outlined the league vision as ‘creating the best possible environment for children to enjoy their football and develop as players.

“This will be done as the league will be of Charter Standard and is also implementing the RESPECT principles that are being delivered nationally by the FA.

“We have consulted the clubs and allowed some onus to be placed upon them in terms of the decision-making process and we are all excited to see the end product when we kick-off in September.”

WFA chief executive Nichola Trigg added: “This exciting opportunity will facilitate the development of our young players, while enabling them to play within a county boundary in addition to our current affiliated leagues.

“We are hopeful that the project will be a success, enabling us to replicate it across a number of age groups in the future.”

The league is a pilot scheme that, if successful, could progress to a similar format across other age groups for the 2014-15 season.
