PUPILS from eight county schools contested the Asda Kwik Cricket year six open finals at Worcestershire's New Road ground.

Children, who had qualified for the day by winning their district tournaments, battled it out to be crowned county champions.

Redditch’s Walkwood Middle School emerged victorious on the day and will now represent Worcestershire in the Midlands finals day at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 9.

It was the latest in a series of tournaments for pupils in years five and six, with 265 schools having taken part so far.

Other schools competing in the year six open finals were Blackminster Middle, Martley C of E Primary, Great Malvern Primary, Cherry Orchard, Cookley Primary, Church of the Ascension and Woolascote.

Tom Hill, cricket development director from Worcestershire Cricket, said: “It is extremely pleasing to see the number of schools entering our Asda kwik cricket competitions increase this year.

“Our three full-time cricket development coaches have worked incredibly hard on the Chance to Shine programme which has seen us deliver six week’s worth of high quality coaching sessions to 116 primary schools across the county.

“Hopefully the children involved in our programme will now have a passion for the game and join our local clubs.”
