MANAGER Carl Heeley hopes to have more players signed up to Worcester City for today’s pre-season trip to Westfields (3pm).

City ran the rule over several new trialists during Thursday’s 0-0 draw against Stourport Swifts at Walshes Meadow which was their second stalemate in a week.

Although Heeley is keen to start finalising his squad in the near future, players got their chance to impress against Swifts.

Former Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Robbie Thompson-Brown completed just over an hour, while right-back Mark Byrne played the entire game having flown over from Bohemians in Ireland.

Forwards Daniel Nti and Ebby Nelson Addy, who were both with new signing George Williams at Loughborough last year, also started.

Ex-Aston Villa academy players Calum Flanagan and Michael Nelson were also involved, the former from the start, as was former Birmingham centre-half Graham Hutchison.

None of the new faces have agreed deals yet but Heeley was impressed and is looking to act sooner rather than later.

He said: “We’ve had discussions with a few players and hopefully we will finalise something by the weekend.

“The attitude of the boys has been very good, they work incredibly hard for each other.”

In a game of few chances against Stourport, Nti went closest for the visitors during the first-half when he was denied by keeper Haydn Whitcombe, while sub trialist Aaron Williams pulled an effort wide late on.

Hutchison was paired with trialist Richard Munday at the heart of the City defence but new signing Sam Smith and Stuart Whitehead, last season’s captain, appeared in the second-half. Striker Danny Glover was a second-half replacement, as was winger Danny Williams, but City could not break through.

Heeley added: “We know that in Conference North we need to be difficult to break down.

“We looked solid and didn’t look like conceding. The next step is the final ball in the last third and creating chances. It was a good work-out for us and was beneficial.”

Meanwhile, City have joined forces with Worcester-based Knowles Sports, Broad Street, to sell replica kit, tickets and merchandise.

Along with the Nutz4Sports shop in George Street, it will continue to give the club a presence in the city while the team plays at Kidderminster Harriers following their departure from St George’s Lane.

City have also linked up with the The Pheasant pub, New Street, to show past match highlights before Saturday home games at 11.30am.

  • Evesham United have reduced prices for adults from £9 to £7 for the home friendly with Worcester on Tuesday, August 6 (7.30pm), as well as their game with Stourbridge today (3pm).
