THE University of Worcester's basketball team marked their success after an invitation by the city's mayor Ian Imray to the Guildhall.

They won their third consecutive British Universities title during the season and councillor Imray presented their winning trophy.

The title holders beat London Metropolitan University 100-93 in the final of the knockout stages in Sheffield.

They had previously defeated Middlesbrough and Birmingham.

They will represent Britain in the World Inter-university Games in Vienna in October.

They won through to the final last year, eventually losing to Leningrad State University in Dublin.

Councillor Imray said: "This third successive title is a fantastic achievement and I'm extremely proud of the team.

"They are great ambassadors for both the university and the city, representing and raising the profile of Worcester throughout the UK and the world."

Andy Harper, University of Worcester team coach, said: "A third consecutive title is an awesome achievement.

"This dedicated group of players have put in outstanding, consistent performances throughout the year and this success is a real credit to everyone involved."

University of Worcester vice chancellor David Green said: "This is an enormous success for the university and I'm delighted that the Mayor of Worcester invited the team to the Guildhall to celebrate their achievement.

"My congratulations go to the coaching team and all the players involved. This win highlights how students at Worcester are able to combine top level sporting excellence alongside academic achievement."

The team also captured the Northern Premier title for the second year running.
