STOURPORT hammer thrower Katie Lambert believes she is starting to show her true potential after throwing a championship record on the way to gold at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games.

Lambert joined 1,600 other competitors in Manchester for the United Kingdom’s largest multi-sport event for elite level school-age athletes.

The 16-year-old from Wyre Forest threw 63.08 metres with the 3k hammer to take the gold medal at the Regional Athletics Centre, beating England South East’s Katie Head into second.

She is aiming to go up to a senior weight for next season and admitted she wants to stand out from the rest after her incredible performance in Manchester.

“It’s amazing to throw a record and a personal best,” she said.

“I’m not surprised because I knew I could do it. I was just waiting for it to happen in competition.

“It is a relief to get there really.

“It’s annoying though because it’s a worlds qualifying distance and I’m a month too late. Next season I go up to the senior weight.

“I’d still like to medal next season at the English Schools and get over 55 metres with the 4k hammer to set myself a mark.”

The games, which is sup - ported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, featured 12 different sports across four days.

Kidderminster judoka Darcie Hancox had to settle for silver in the -48kg category after losing out to Yasmin Gordon in the final.

But the 13-year-old Bewdley High School pupil admitted she was still happy with her efforts after being relatively new to the sport.

“I think I did well and it was just a few mistakes that really cost me the gold medal. I think I could’ve gone one better,” said Hancox, who trains with Samurai Judo Club.

“I don’t know if I was expecting a medal. I’m very young so it’s only the start of my judo career really.

“I’ll be hoping for more next time around.

“It’s amazing to be part of the Sainsbury’s School Games.

“It’s one of my first ever big events. The crowd really helps.

“I’ll be coming back here over the next few years and aiming for gold medals. I want to try and compete at the Olympic Games.”

The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games is supported by a range of partners, including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Department of Health and Brit - ish Paralympic Association.

The Games were held in venues across Manchester from September 3 until 6.
