NEW father Tyler Weir will have a break from changing nappies when he takes the field for Worcester City in Saturday’s Vanarama National League North home clash against struggling Altrincham (3pm).

The 25-year-old was on tenterhooks in City’s 5-1 battering at high-flying Darlington last weekend with a car on standby to ferry him back to Herefordshire if his partner went into labour.

Unlike City’s defensive woes, there were no personal alarms for Weir and the former Hereford United and Gloucester City defender became a father for the first time on Monday night.

“When you have your first child, it’s an anxious time,” said City boss Heeley, a married father with three daughters.

“Tyler was a bit anxious against Darlington for obvious reasons but hopefully he will be able to relax now safe in the knowledge his baby has arrived safe and well.

“The last time I spoke to Tyler, he and his partner hadn’t chosen a name for their baby boy, so we will be keen to hear.”

The boss believes City will be given a stern test against struggling Altrincham, who are third from bottom and crashed to a 3-2 defeat at home to previously-winless Bradford Park Avenue in their last outing.

Worcester are 14th in the table and Heeley admitted he was frustrated with his side’s defending in their heavy defeat at promotion-chasing Darlington.

“It was a strange game for us because we competed quite well in open play and had chances in the game,” he said.

“We were not caused many problems in open play but Darlington were very effective from set-pieces and we did not defend them at all well.

“We did not deal at all well with corners or the second-phase play and they took advantage and showed how effective they are in that area.”

Heeley continued: “We kept two clean sheets prior to the Darlington game and that’s the erratic nature of us.

“We can defend very well but Darlington were that bit faster and, as a manager, it’s frustrating because there isn’t much we could do from the touchline.”

According to Heeley, City have no new injuries to worry about and there are no plans to bring in fresh faces before tomorrow’s match at the Victoria Ground.

Central defender Tom Sharpe should be available after missing the long trek up north due to “personal reasons”, while Worcester trio Connor Gater, Joe Bates and Nathan Olukanmi remain on loan at Stourbridge, Tividale and Leamington respectively.

Heeley believes third-choice keeper Nathan Draper could benefit from a spell away from the club too.

“We want to get Nick out for some games but, at the moment, nothing has been arranged,” he said.
