NINE-year-old Mya Slavin has won Ombersley’s junior order of merit award for 2016.

The youngster was rewarded at their annual presentation night after achieving her Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) handicap of 36 at the age of eight.

Slavin, who attends Westacre Middle School in Droitwich, has developed into a promising player with the help of lessons at the club’s Graham Glenister Golf Academy since she was six.

Her accolade was presented by her father Paul, who took on Ombersley’s junior organiser role at the start of the year.

He said: “While I was captain in 2015-16, I noticed a lack of structure and events at Ombersley for the junior members we had.

“I decided after my captain’s year was over I would strive to develop the junior section within the club.

“My daughter Mya and a number of her friends have weekly lessons at the academy but I was keen to see their experience of the game develop from practicing to actually playing on the course.

“Since I have been organiser, the junior membership at Ombersley has increased six-fold and we now hold a variety of competitions and events for the juniors and their parents throughout the year.”

Paul Slavin added the academy at the Bishops Wood Road club are giving away free introduction to golf lessons for any interested juniors.
