HOTSHOTS Lee Hughes and Dave Reynolds come back into contention to complete a full Worcester City squad for tonight’s trip to Westfields (7.45).

Joint-boss John Snape reported no injury concerns ahead of the Midland Football League Premier Division clash in Hereford.

Jamie Smith, withdrawn at half-time during City’s last outing against Lye Town 11 days ago, has sufficiently recovered from back trouble to be considered for selection with Hughes now over illness and Reynolds free from the shackles of a sore knee.

The postponement of the trip to Stourport Swifts and home fixture with Rocester means some of the older members of the squad will be ready for action, giving Snape and Hughes a selection headache.

“It will be a tough selection for Lee and I to make,” said Snape.

“Jamie should be okay, he would have been fit for the Stourport game and had a light session on the Thursday night so there are no issues.

“Hughesy has suffered a bit over the past few days but should be alright. He felt pretty under the weather and probably would not have been well enough to play on Saturday.

“Competition for places has increased. We might have made changes last Tuesday at Stourport had the match gone ahead but with us having a couple of postponements everyone comes back into contention.”

Westfields, famed for their FA Cup exploits last season, have played only twice since Boxing Day with both matches ending in defeat to Hamble Club in the FA Vase and leaders Coleshill Town in the league.

They are one of two teams to have played fewer matches than City in the league and sit 10th, eight points behind going into a showdown that Snape expects to be a tactical battle.

“Westfields have a footballing side who look to play, they have the same ethos as us in terms of getting it down and moving the ball in the right areas,” he added.

“I am looking forward to it. I think it will be a bit of a game of chess for the first hour and the first goal will be crucial.”

Connections between the clubs have been almost non-existent over the years but club captain Brad Birch, midfield partner Nathan Hayward, wide man James Baldwin and goalkeeper Matt Gwynne have represented Westfields recently.

Gwynne totalled 88 appearances across three seasons at Allpay Park, while Baldwin played a lesser-known part in the run to the first round proper of the FA Cup, scoring once in a 4-3 win at Stourport and twice in a 5-1 triumph at Tividale in the opening two rounds.

Baldwin totalled four goals from five starts and two substitute appearances before moving on to Bishop’s Cleeve.
