RECORD-breaking resistance from Worcestershire could not prevent Somerset from climbing into second spot in Specsavers County Championship Division One.

They defeated the bottom-of-the-table Blackfinch New Road hosts by 141 runs on the final day despite the efforts of debutant centurion Alex Milton and Steve Magoffin.

Worcestershire's top order failed again in the match as Jamie Overton and Josh Davey took four wickets in 15 balls inside the first hour after they resumed on 50-2.

But wicketkeeper Milton, standing in for the injured Ben Cox, kept them waiting until after tea with support from Magoffin in a County record stand of 136 for the last wicket against any opposition.

It beat the 119 by William Burns and George Wilson in 1906 — also against Somerset at New Road.

Cardiff MCCU captain Milton went to his hundred by clipping Craig Overton off his legs for his 15th boundary to go with one six. It came from 172 balls.

But Somerset sealed their fourth league win when Magoffin was dismissed by Craig Overton for 43 shortly after tea to leave Milton undefeated on 104.

Fit-again Jamie Overton ended the match with figures of 31-6-143-8 and Davey claimed seven wickets.

New overseas player Azhar Ali made an instant impact with a century on his debut while Marcus Trescothick, James Hildreth, skipper Tom Abell and former County keeper Steven Davies also made sizeable contributions.

Worcestershire, who had previously gone two Championship matches without defeat, were outplayed since having Somerset at 115-4 early in the afternoon on the first day after putting them into bat.

They are still in touch with the teams above them in the battle to stay up but there will have to be a improvement in their overall performance despite England spinner Moeen Ali’s encouraging eight-wicket haul.

Milton also kept tidily on his Championship debut.

The County had been rocked by Moeen's dismissal to the final delivery on Tuesday evening and quickly ran into trouble on the final day.

Davey struck first as England Lions batsman Joe Clarke (5) played down the wrong line and was bowled.

Then Jamie Overton swooped with successive deliveries as Travis Head and Ed Barnard perished to expansive shots.

Head, in his final Championship innings for the County, moved on to 46 but threw his bat at a wide delivery and nicked through to Davies.

Barnard aimed a first-ball drive at another tempting ball from Jamie Overton and Trescothick pouched the chance at second slip.

Milton blocked the hat-trick ball but in the next over skipper Brett D’Oliveira edged Davey to Hildreth at first slip.

But Milton and Ross Whiteley tried to salvage pride and looked reasonably secure in defying Somerset for 20 overs.

However, the returning Jamie Overton broke the partnership when Whiteley (39) was caught behind to leave Milton unbeaten on 31 at lunch.

Somerset moved closer to victory after the resumption with Jack Leach striking twice in the same over.

Luke Wood (13) drilled to Peter Trego at mid-off before Dillon Pennington (0) drove at the spinner and the ball bounced up off Trescothick kneeling at slip to Davies.

Last man Magoffin accompanied Milton in providing more defiance until the former sliced Craig Overton to backward point.
