PERSHORE husband-and-wife pair John and Natasza McClay won gold medals at the 11th International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships in Hungary.

The duo helped paddle Purple Warriors, an injured veterans team representing Great Britain, to victory in the standard boat 500 metres race in the adapted and impaired category of the competition.

They also gained a place in the premier open 10-man small boat 200m challenge in Szeged against non-impaired world crews but did not win.

In 2017 the McClays won bronze in the 500m para category in the IDBF Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races.

They were both injured in action — John while serving the Irish Guards and Royal Military Police in Bosnia in 2002 and Natasza with the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in Iraq in 2005.

Purple Warriors were created for serving and retired members of the forces who have some form of disability or impairment from their service.

They also hope to compete in the future against similar military crews from other countries.
