DIRECTOR of rugby Dai Young conceded Worcester Warriors were “probably the better team” after his Wasps side snatched a 21-20 victory at Sixways.

And he reckoned Warriors would have gained “a lot confidence” from the way they performed in the Premiership opener on Saturday.

Worcester led 13-0 and 20-13 thanks to tries from Ryan Mills and Sam Lewis but they were unable to finish Wasps off.

Joe Launchbury and Tommy Taylor went over with Billy Searle landing 11 points from the tee including a 68th minute penalty to give the visitors the edge.

There was then drama at the death as Warriors fly-half Duncan Weir pushed his drop goal narrowly wide with the last kick of the game.

“We could not have moaned if they had won because they were probably the better team,” Young said.

“But I don’t think there was that much in it.

“They had a really strong period in the first 20 minutes and we had a couple of opportunities that we blew as well.

“There was not a lot in it so we were pleased we got over the line.”

Young added: “I think (Warriors) will take a lot of confidence from that game - and rightly so.

“I am sure they will be frustrated because they probably thought that was a game they should have won.

“But they are strong enough to pick victories up and gain some momentum.”

Solomons was bemused by the penalty count with Warriors penalised 20 times by referee Karl Dickson whereas Wasps were pinged on just seven occasions.

“We talked about discipline before the game and the message was just as strong at half-time," Young said.

“But we had a bit more ball (in the second half) and when you have got that you tend to put pressure on and penalties tend to go your way a little bit more.”

Solomons said he would also examine every penalty decision made by referee Dickson in a bid to gain clarification.

Young added: “There were things that both of us could probably say were harsh or weren’t correct but you have just got to get on with it, haven't you?”
