BOSS Alan Solomons has contacted referees’ supremo Tony Spreadbury after being “concerned” over Worcester Warriors’ high penalty count against Wasps.

Match official Karl Dickson penalised Warriors a whopping 21 times and Wasps on seven occasions in the Premiership opener at Sixways last Saturday.

Solomons reckoned the disparity had a “massive impact” on the outcome of the clash as Worcester lost 21-20.

That led Solomons to seek clarification over why Dickson felt the need to punish his side on so many occasions.

Having watched the game back Solomons said he had now identified areas Warriors were “concerned about” and had taken his case to Spreadbury who is the Rugby Football Union’s head of professional game match officials.

“I said that I would take the matter up through the correct channels and having watched the film I have done exactly that,” Solomons said.

“It is in the process at the moment.

“I think there are good channels of communication between the referees which is headed up by Tony Spreadbury and the directors of rugby.”

Solomons refused to openly express his frustration over the refereeing decisions but said it was “pretty self-evident” why he had decided to take the matter further.

“There would not be a process if I did not feel that I had information to pass through which I have done,” Solomons continued.

"There were 21 penalties. But I don’t think it is right for me to discuss any of them in detail because there is a particular process you have to go through.

“There has been communication right from the off and hopefully it will be brought to a finality in a short period.”

When asked what he hoped to gain from the enquiry, Solomons said: “The purpose of the process is to say these are the things that we are concerned about, to get a response, to debate that response and to get clarity on both sides.”

Solomons was willing to accept Warriors were at fault for some of the penalties but was baffled by the tally they accumulated.

“Most teams aim to get 10 or less penalties,” Solomons said.

“(Penalties are) going to happen during the course of the game but 21 is a high count so therefore we have had to look at it carefully and we felt that it merited going through a proper process.”

He added: “We obviously took out the clips that we wanted clarity on and then they will respond so there is interaction between the two and then the thing will finally be brought to an end.”
