TYLER Weir reckons his new wing-back role at Worcester City is helping to put a “nightmare” spell behind him.

Weir opted to stay put after City dropped three levels during the summer of 2017 but briefly moved on to Hednesford Town early in the campaign.

He soon returned to the Victoria Ground only for uncertainty over the club’s playing budget to prompt a shift to Redditch United where he finished the season.

That disruption spilled into pre-season when Weir signed for Midland Football League rivals Westfields only to perform a U-turn and commit to Worcester once more.

The plan had been to play in central midfield but City’s recent shift to a 3-5-2 has released the shackles, allowing Weir to gallop forward and link up with creative catalyst Mat Birley.

“The role is new to me but I can get up the pitch more often which is where I want to be, I am enjoying it,” said Weir.

“Central midfield was where I wanted to play but in this league I don’t think that will get the best from me, too much of the play goes over the top.

“The way the team is playing is good for me, we have won five in a row so it’s happy days at the moment.

“Last season I did not really enjoy it as much as I should have. It was not what I expected to be honest and I should have been in my prime.

“It was a nightmare, on and off the field, and because of different circumstances I had to leave.

“I have the love back for it now, though. I am committed and want to be here.

“I would like to push on now but the team winning is the main thing. We have a good squad here and anyone playing in my position has the chance to do well.

“The good thing is everyone knows their jobs and I think there is more to come. We can keep this run going.”

Whether Weir will get the chance to play in his more advanced position at Wolverhampton Sporting Community tomorrow (3pm) could be influenced by absences.

Dave Reynolds and Andy Gallinagh, who both suffered ligament damage during the 2-0 win over AFC Wulfrunians nine days ago, are “two or three weeks away” from fitness according to manager John Snape.

Joel Caines (ankle) will probably miss out but may return for Wednesday’s home match with Quorn. Kyonn Evans and Chris Withington are unavailable.

Player-coach Mat Birley is expected to be involved after coming through training unscathed this week, dual-registered goalkeeper Dan Jezeph is back from a one-match recall by parent club Tamworth, Jamie Smith returns after suspension and Luke English comes back into contention.
