WORCESTER team Numpty Dumptys won the British Men’s Skittles Championships.

The final turned into a Worcestershire derby against Renegades from Redditch.

Numpty Dumptys, the 2009 runners-up, claimed a thriller 387-369 after producing championship form throughout at Torquay’s Riviera International Centre.

They won all their group matches against Night Crawlers from Yeovil, fellow Worcester side Rattlers and Coventry team Spitfires.

Numpty Dumptys overcame Granny's Cornish Shorts from Cornwall in the last eight and then three-time past champions and Worcester rivals Highwaymen in a nail-biting semi-final by just one pin.

In the final, the city team were 13 down after two legs but reduced the deficit to four with a score of 81.

On the fourth leg they posted 96 to storm ahead by 22.

Renegades responded with 81 to leave Numpty Dumptys 60 to win and they hit 77 for an 18-pin success.

Captain Russell Edwards and his team held it together to win the coveted trophy, medals, team shirts and a skittles weekend away for 10 people.

Renegades were first-time qualifiers after years of trying.

Around 150 teams entered the championships going through a round of regional leagues and play-offs.

The final 64 converged on Torquay to compete in men’s, women's and mixed team events.

Torquay-based Serious About Events hosted the championships.
