WORCESTER City chairman Steve Goode has called for a straight-talking approach from councillors against a proposed new stadium at Perdiswell.

On Friday the club’s supporters’ trust succeeded in a bid to overturn Worcester City Council’s decision to reject a planning application for the site against the advice of its own officers.

An appeal to the Planning Inspectorate was not only won but came with the verdict that the benefits “would significantly outweigh the harms” and represent a “sustainable form of development”, providing “considerable community and recreational benefits” according to planning inspector GP Jones.

The plot at Perdiswell is council owned with Goode’s predecessor Anthony Hampson adamant “it is clear the land is not going to be transferred” while pursuing the since-failed bid to relocate to Parsonage Way.

City council leader Marc Bayliss acknowledged Hampson had been “fairly correct in saying there is not support on the council for a land transfer at Perdiswell” in the wake of the Parsonage Way proposals collapsing but a bullish Goode seems keen to tackle any problems head on.

“I really cannot do justice in words as to how pleased I am, everyone is so focused and people have smiles on their faces again,” said Goode of the appeal victory.

“There is a long way to go, I just hope it goes the way we all want it to.

“I think people have to be made aware that we would not be in this position without the trust. We would be going nowhere and everyone involved with Worcester City should be thankful for what the trust has done to keep our great club alive.

“Now we have something to aim for, there is that bit of light at the end of the tunnel. There is still a lot of work to do but we have a focus now.

“The next step is for the trust to look at all the bits and pieces that have to be done.

“That will take a bit of time but I am sure they are already on the case. We will discuss with the trust what the next move is once they have reported back.

“Everything has been positive so far so I can only expect us to get more positive news.”

Asked what he would like to see from the council in the wake of the decision, Goode replied: “I just want the council to be straight with us, if there are issues to let us know what they are.

“Eventually we will all meet up and I want everything to be straight down the line. It is about communication and making sure we are on the same page because we all want the best for Worcester.

“Being a football fan, I am always going to say a ground is best for the city. Everyone has a view but this is not just about a football ground, it is about the whole community.

“Hopefully there will be lots of different things going on there and that can only be good for Worcester and its people.”

Goode finished with a call to arms to back the City’s supporters’ trust.

“It would be great if every fan of sport in the city joined the trust. It is £10 per year and easy to do,” he said.

“With the work the trust has done it would be fantastic for them to know people are backing them. I am sure everyone is.”
