WORCESTER Wolves Wheelchair Basketball Club got off to a flying start in the 2018-19 season.

They secured a 40-19 win at Coventry Academy in National League Division Three South West.

New head coach Harry Smith, a sports coaching science graduate and the University of Worcester head coach last season, has also shadowed Great Britain men’s boss Haj Bhania to improve his coaching expertise.

Both teams got off to a slow start scoring-wise but Wolves displayed strong defence throughout.

As the battle went on Worcester’s scoring power increased from the second quarter as they had a 20-9 lead at half-time.

In the second half Wolves continued to dominate as the score was 32-13 at the end of the third quarter, allowing the away team to comfortably see out the game.

Top scorer with 11 points was Frankie Jones who has returned to the club following his seasonal stint at the now-defunct Premier League club TCAT Warriors.

Smith said: “Defensively the boys put an absolute effort in as we kept Coventry to under 20 points.

"When our offence got flowing we started moving the ball more which is what strung things together as we ended up putting quite a few points on the board.

"I’m pleased we got the win in the first game of the season and I think we’ve got a good platform to build on from here.”

Wolves visit Swansea Storm next Sunday before a home double-header weekend against Gloucester Blazers on October 27 and Hampshire Harriers on October 28 at the St John’s Campus Sports Centre.
