WHEN Jess Wells turned up to watch her dad's snooker team at Heenans Social Club, she had no idea she would be about to make history.

The 15-year-old, daughter of league chairman Geoff Wells and a reserve for the team, was unexpectedly called on to play a frame when a fellow player had to leave on a family emergency.

Although she lost her frame as Heenans B' were defeated 4-1 by St Stephens C' in Division Three, Wells became the youngest female to compete in the league.

Head girl at Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Wells said: "I lost but I was playing against quite an experienced player. I was really nervous before I played but once I got over it I was fine.

"I was scared I wasn't going to score any points. It helped me in my confidence when I got the black in."

Wells, also part of Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society's youth section WODYS, has always had an association with the sport because of her father and didn't mind being the only girl.

She added: "Because my dad's always been involved in snooker we have always gone down to Heenans on a Saturday and had games. I am definitely getting better at it.

"It didn't bother me because I have always played against my dad or granddad. I have never really played against a woman so, for me, it's just normal."
