DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons reckons Duncan Weir is among the top three best Scottish fly-halves and is optimistic over his chances of featuring in next year’s Six Nations.

Weir has been in impressive form for Worcester Warriors this season, racking up 69 points including three tries in six appearances.

But the 27-year-old, who joined Warriors from Edinburgh this summer, was not named in Gregor Townsend’s squad for the upcoming autumn internationals.

Solomons sympathised with Weir but said the stand-off remained “level-headed” after the news of his omission.

“Gregor is a good coach, is knowledgeable and picks who he thinks are the best players,” Solomons said.

“For me Duncan is playing terrific rugby. I am really sorry for him that he has not made it.

“Obviously everyone wants to represent their country but Duncan has played superbly for us.

“The match he played against Bristol was absolutely outstanding.”

Weir has won 27 caps for his country since making his debut in 2012 and made two appearances at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

But his last outing in a Scotland shirt was in March 2017 as an injury to his groin followed by an abdominal issue forced him to miss a large chunk of the 2017-18 campaign.

Glasgow-born Weir has hit the ground running at Sixways with his accuracy from the tee helping him to boast the joint-third highest points tally in this season’s Gallagher Premiership.

“Duncan is a very level-headed, mature guy so there is no problem,” said Solomons on how Weir reacted to Scotland’s squad.

Asked whether he was confident Weir could win a call-up for next year’s Six Nations, Solomons added: “Yes as he is a very good player and there is a long way to go.

“Adam Hastings has come in as the number two behind Finn Russell but I would guess that Duncan is certainly in the top three.”
