TYLER Weir vowed to don Worcester City’s colours again in the future despite a mixed reaction to his latest move away.

The popular full-back has jumped three levels to sign contract terms with Gloucester City in National South and played 88 minutes in Wednesday’s 4-3 defeat to Woking.

While most Worcester supporters understood Weir’s reasons for taking up the offer, some said the club should not consider signing him again on the back of three departures in the past 14 months.

But Weir, 28, explained the call to move on had been “a no brainer” due to the security the deal offers his young family, a factor he hopes fans will understand in time.

“If it had been any team lower than this level I would not have gone,” said Weir.

“Worcester last season was awful for me football wise. I hated it for different reasons, some personal, but Snapper (manager John Snape) gave me a chance farther up the field this time and got the best out of me.

“I could be fitter but I feel a lot better and that’s thanks to Snapper and Ash Vincent (assistant manager).

“This was a no brainer, though. Gloucester offered me a contract at my hometown club where I have played before, it is a place where things are a lot more professional and on the move now. It is a club very much on the up.

“At this level I need to step up. I was playing well at Worcester but I am 28, if I don’t do it now I probably will never do it. If I hadn’t taken this chance I don’t think it would have come again to be honest.

“One day I will be back playing for Worcester. I got a text to say I have played 242 games for them and I hadn’t realised it was that many.

“Most of the fans, probably 90 per cent, have been brilliant. It was tough to leave but I have a contract at a club three levels higher.

“I know have been back four or five times now but if those people were in the same position as me I would like to think they would do the same as I have, which is to look after my family by playing at a higher standard with a bit of security.

“I have had a lot of messages on Facebook, Twitter and via text to say congratulations and I want to say thank you for that, the support has been incredible.

“I will be back one day but at the minute this is the club for me. The two clubs I would always want to play for are Worcester and Gloucester.”
