SCOTLAND fly-half Duncan Weir is refusing to get “hung up” on his World Cup quest as he focuses on having “fun” in a free-flowing Worcester Warriors back-line.

The 27-year-old stand-off has made a big impact at Sixways since his summer switch from Edinburgh and his impressive performances have seen him return to the national set-up.

Although Weir has failed to make an appearance for his country this month, the “proud” Scotsman was delighted to train with the squad.

“It’s been great to be back in the mix,” Weir said.

“I have loved going back up the road and training hard.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Glasgow-born Weir has won 27 caps for Scotland since making his debut in 2012 and made two appearances at the 2015 World Cup.

But the number 10 who missed a large chuck of last season due to injury has not featured since March 2017.

He is also behind Finn Russell and Adam Hastings in the pecking order and was a late call up by head coach Gregor Townsend.

But speaking in late October Townsend said any of the players in his plans for the autumn internationals had a “very good chance” of playing in next summer’s World Cup.

“I am just taking every opportunity that comes,” Weir said.

“I have been called up late so I understand that I am in the later headaches for the selection battle.

“But I am just looking to get back into that environment, train hard and if anything comes my way then I will look to take it.

“But I need to do the business at the club first and that merits international honours.

“I know the World Cup is on the horizon and everyone is talking about it.

"But for me it’s just doing the hard graft and taking every opportunity in match situations.

“To be honest I have had really good fun this year and I think that has come across in my style of play.

“I am just enjoying myself and not getting hung up on things.”

Weir has scored four tries in eight outings for Warriors this term and his 69-point haul in the Premiership is only bettered by Leicester Tigers’ George Ford (94).

“I have got a tremendous and athletic back-line outside me at Worcester,” Weir said.

“It’s been really good fun just giving those guys the ball and reaping the benefits of getting a second touch and scoring some tries.

“I am looking to have fun and wherever that takes me I will be giving that 110 per cent anywhere that is.”
