MANAGER John Snape remains confident George Forsyth will stay at Worcester City with a definitive answer expected this week.

The 22-year-old defender or midfielder is the subject of an approach from Gresley, currently bottom of Northern Premier League East one level above City.

It came in at a similar time to the swoop that saw club captain Jordan Stoddart lured to Redditch United but Snape spoke of his confidence that Forsyth would not follow suit ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Ilkeston Town.

Forsyth, who turned down a move to Midland Football League Premier Division promotion chasers Walsall Wood in November, had yet to speak to new Gresley boss Gavin Hurren ahead of that game but Snape believes is star attraction's head will not be turned.

“George recently took over as our on-field captain having led from the front all season,” said Snape.

“I think his performance on Saturday was special, we played more from the back because he was in those positions and that allowed more creative players in front of him to get on the ball.

“I don’t want him to leave, absolutely not. He can now speak to Gresley but at the moment we plan for Coventry Sphinx at home on Saturday expecting George to be part of the squad.”

Stoddart, 26, dropped a level to join hometown club City from Cirencester Town in November 2017 and featured 53 times, scoring two goals.

“From the moment I signed Jordan he proved to be a fantastic person and footballer,” said Snape.

“This season probably has not been the same for him as last but he always gave his all and remains someone I would want in any trench or tight situation.

“I am disappointed and gutted to see him go but understand why he wants to test himself at a higher level.

“He has that opportunity between now and the end of the season at Redditch and we would like to wish him well.”

Snape attempted to sign another defender ahead of the Ilkeston clash but the deal fell through at the 11th hour.

There could be another player, a more attacking option, in the pipeline this week as City continue to cast the net.
